Issues and Applications in Alternative Investments

An interactive, NASBA approved two-day course examining the alternative investment market, structured products, modern investment securitizations, real assets and private equities, corporate governance, hedge funds, and alternative mutual funds. The discussion will span a wide range of current events from increasing hedge fund use of reinsurance vehicles to modern quantitative algorithms and how they are used today. 

Presenter: Michael McDonald, PhD

Michael has served as a business consultant for various companies, providing training and content authoring services as a subject matter expert in finance and economics for firms like IBM, Stanley Black & Decker. Previously, Michael worked as a data scientist for a tech start-up in the financial industry, as a municipal bond trader for Wachovia Securities and for a large hedge fund doing data mining and analysis. Currently, Michael is Assistant Professor of Finance at Fairfield University in Connecticut. He also gives lectures on a variety of corporate finance and investment topics from mergers and acquisitions to corporate governance.

  • Identify alternative investments
  • Describe how alternative investments fit into an overall asset allocation strategy
  • Analyze pricing and risks of the different alternative investments
  • Discuss hedge fund strategies
  • Discuss structured products
  • Analyze hedge fun indices and derivatives
  • Assess real assets
  • Discuss and comprehend the current events in the alternative investments markets and be conversant on future trends in those markets
  • Apply new knowledge of alternative investments to a variety of different occupations and career paths at many levels from entry-level to director-level
